Shrewsbury-based psychedelic bard Joseph Cave returns with a hymn for the heartbroken with his new single, “River Flows.” But it’s a deceptive listen, as the heartbreaking tale reflection of love gone wrong two decades prior is accompanied by one of Cave’s finest melodies to date, a propelling, upbeat rhythm that recalls Oh, Inverted World-era Shins, with a hint of the more pastoral fields of XTC. You’ll feel the wistfulness of the past, but you’ll also feel the warmth of the sun of a clear, early Spring Saturday afternoon. This is the sound of heartbreak seen from a heartbreak-free distance, a mature recollection of the worst Saturday of your life.
